Quoted on enquiry

These depend on your order, your market or the certificate that covers your run, so we quote them rather than publish one figure that would be wrong for most buyers. Ask and you get the number for your specification.

  • UN certification code
  • Approval / test certificate number
  • Minimum order quantity

Before you order: Fuel containers carry a dangerous goods certification regime that varies by destination market. Tell us where you are importing and we will confirm exactly what documentation applies before you order.

Dimensions, material thickness, carton and container figures come from the current production specification. Empty weights are derived from the quoted net carton weight. Confirm against the drawing issued with your order.

Why It Is Built This Way

What makes this product different

01

Built for hydrocarbon service

Internal coating specified for fuel rather than a bare or food-grade interior. The wrong interior is the single most common failure in a cheap fuel can.

02

Vented cap

Vented screw closure manages pressure change with temperature and altitude, which is what stops a sealed can deforming or spraying on opening.

03

UN-marked for transport

Marked for dangerous goods carriage. Confirm the exact UN code and approval number for your jurisdiction with us before importing.

04

Rated for JP-08 jet fuel

Alongside petrol, diesel and kerosene, this line is compatible with JP-08, the NATO-standard military jet and ground-equipment fuel. That is what makes it usable on an airfield or a defence contract rather than only a forecourt.

Manufacturing & Quality

How it is made, and how it is checked

Manufacturing

The body is pressed from cold-rolled steel to the pattern, seam-welded, then finished as set out in the specification above: internal coating, galvanising or powder coat according to what the can carries. Pressing runs across our Vietnam and China plants under one specification managed from Singapore, so the drawing and closure stay identical whichever plant fills the order.

Quality control

UN 3A1 certification is earned through a defined test regimen, and the can is built and verified to it:

  • Leakproofness test — seams and closure checked under air pressure
  • Internal pressure test — the body proven to its packing group
  • Drop test — a filled can dropped from the certified height
  • Stacking test — holds a warehouse stack load without distortion
  • Dimensional and finish inspection against the drawing

Certificate, test report and stamped UN marking are available for the exact design you order.

Compatible Liquids

What it holds, and what it does not

Suitable for

Petrol, diesel, kerosene and JP-08 jet fuel

Not suitable for

Acids, alkalis, food and drinking water. The steel body is built for hydrocarbon fuels and oils, so water, food and aggressive chemicals need a different line.

Compliance by market

What this product has to satisfy, market by market

The regimes that apply to this type of container in each market we ship to, with the detail behind each one a click away. This is what the market asks for; what this particular design already holds is in the specification above.

Orientation for specification, not legal advice, and not a statement that this design holds a given approval. Requirements turn on the exact design, contents and destination, and they change. Tell us the market at enquiry and we confirm what applies to your specification, what we hold and what we would need to obtain.

Questions, Answered

The things buyers ask before they order

What can I store in the 20L NATO Steel Fuel Can?

It is built for hydrocarbon fuels: petrol, diesel, kerosene and JP-08 jet fuel. The interior is coated for that service, so keep it to those fuels.

Can it hold acids, solvents or industrial chemicals?

No. The coated steel body suits hydrocarbon fuels only, and acids and aggressive chemicals attack it. Those liquids belong in our HDPE or fluorinated jerrycan range.

Can I put drinking water or a food-grade liquid in it?

No. This is a coated fuel can and it is not food-safe. Use our NATO steel water can for potable water, or the AISI 304 stainless line when you need food-grade certification.

What is it made of and how thick is the steel?

Pressed cold-rolled steel at 0.6 mm, with an internal coating for hydrocarbon service. Empty weight is about 3.1 kg.

Is it UN-certified for dangerous goods?

Steel fuel cans of this pattern are certified to UN 3A1 by design and by plant, and this can is UN-marked. Ask us for the certificate, the test report and the stamped marking for the exact design you order.

Can I sell it as a fuel can in the United States or California?

Portable fuel containers sold there must meet EPA and, for California, CARB requirements, and they typically need a child-resistant closure and a flame arrester that a standard NATO can does not carry. Tell us the market and we will confirm what applies and supply the closure and mitigation device.

Is it refillable and recyclable?

Yes. It refills through the vented gasketed cap, and the steel body is recyclable at end of life. Check the coating and gasket periodically in fuel service.

Can I get it in our own colour and branding?

Yes. The body is powder coated, olive drab as standard or any RAL colour you specify, and we can laser etch or emboss your mark. Private label is available.

Will it fit standard jerry can holders and racks?

Yes. It is the standard NATO three-handle pattern, so it seats in the usual carriers, racks and holders, including our own mount range.

What is the minimum order and lead time?

MOQ and lead time are set on quotation. The cans are made in our Vietnam and China plants and managed from Singapore, and they pack four to a carton for container shipment.
