A farm runs on diesel carried to machinery across the yard and the field. The container has to survive that, hold the fuel cleanly, and meet the storage rules that apply to on-farm fuel.

The field container

For refuelling tractors, pumps and machinery away from a bulk tank, a rugged steel jerry can or a horizontal can that stows on a machine fits. Steel takes the knocks of field use, and a galvanized body resists the wash-down and the weather. A tap or spout turns a two-hand pour into controlled dispensing at the machine. An upright can sits in a rack for carrying between jobs, while a horizontal can bolts flat against a tractor or implement frame and stays put over rough ground. Diesel on a hot manifold is a fire you lit yourself, so a spout that keeps the pour on target earns its place.

Before the diesel bug starts
Water ingress is the dominant failure on a farm, not fuel age. The microbial growth it feeds blocks filters and damages injection systems.

Keep the fuel clean

Dirt and water are diesel's real enemies. A modern engine meters fuel through fine injectors and filters, and grit or moisture blocks them, so a dirty can costs you a workshop bill rather than a wipe-down. Keep the can clean inside, seal it after every fill, and store it so any water and sediment settle to the bottom instead of swilling into the tank. Draw from the top, not the dregs.

The tolerance for dirt has fallen sharply and most operators have not noticed. A modern common-rail injector meters fuel through clearances measured in single micrometres at pressures above 2,000 bar, so a particle far too small to see will score a plunger or hold an injector open. That is why an older tractor tolerated a scruffy can and a new one does not: the machine changed, the practice did not, and the failure lands as a rebuild rather than a filter change.

Water compounds it in three separate ways rather than one. It corrodes the injection components directly, it strips the lubricity diesel provides to the parts it passes through, and at the fuel-water interface it feeds the microbial growth described below. That is why a can with a centimetre of water in the bottom is worse than a can with the same volume of grit, and why a settling period before you pour is worth more than any amount of wiping the outside.

The diesel bug, and why water is the whole story

Diesel does not spoil on a farm the way petrol does. It is contaminated, and almost always by water, which arrives through condensation in a part-full tank, a leaking fill cap or a breather drawing humid air as the tank cools overnight.

Water settles beneath the fuel, and the interface between the two is where microbial growth lives: it needs the water to survive and the fuel as food. The colonies produce a dark sludge that blocks filters, and their by-products are acidic enough to corrode tank and injection components from the inside.

Which is why the remedies are all about water rather than fuel. Keep tanks full to reduce the air space that condenses, drain the sump on a schedule rather than when a problem appears, fit and maintain a water-separating filter, and treat a biocide as a response to a confirmed problem rather than routine insurance.

Cans, bowser and tank count towards one total rather than being assessed separately, so the exemption covers fewer farms than its reputation suggests. Above the line the requirement is 110 per cent of the largest container or 25 per cent of the total, whichever is greater. Storage inside a building is outside the regulations, so a bowser in a barn and the same bowser in the yard are different questions.

Diesel keeps, if you keep it right

Diesel stores six to twelve months, longer if kept cool, dry and treated, so on-farm stock rotates rather than sits indefinitely. Keep cans sealed and labelled, and read storing fuel safely for shelf life and stabilisers.

Cold is the other seasonal variable, and it has a specification behind it. Diesel contains paraffin waxes that crystallise as the temperature drops, and the crystals block a filter long before the fuel stops flowing. The measure is the cold filter plugging point, and EN 590 sets seasonal grades so that winter diesel plugs at a lower temperature than summer diesel. Fuel bought in August and carried into a February morning is summer grade whatever the pump said, which is one more argument for rotating on-farm stock rather than holding it.

Rotation also has a practical shape on a farm that a household reserve does not. Cans go out to machines and come back part-full, and a part-full can is the one that condenses water overnight. The habit that works is to run cans down and refill them rather than topping them up, and to keep a small number in circulation rather than a large number half-used. Fewer cans, fuller, turned over faster.

The bottom row is the one that costs money. A splash of DEF in diesel corrodes the injection system and a splash of diesel in DEF ruins the dose, so the cans are dedicated rather than cleaned between liquids. A spare can costs less than an hour of workshop time.

One fuel, one can

Run a separate, labelled can for each liquid. Diesel goes in one, petrol for two-stroke and small engines in another, and DEF or AdBlue in a third. DEF must never meet diesel: a splash of it in your fuel corrodes the injection system, and a splash of diesel in your DEF ruins the dose. Dedication is cheaper than it looks once the failure is priced. A spare can costs less than an hour of workshop time, and a DEF-into-diesel or diesel-into-DEF event costs an injection system or an emissions module. The economics are lopsided enough that the only reason cans get shared is that nobody has done the sum, which is why it is worth doing once in front of whoever buys them.

Bulk versus cans

A farm often runs a bulk tank in the yard and cans to carry fuel to the field, decanting through a tap or an adapter. Match the format to the volume, as in jerry can, drum or IBC.

Keep the transfer in mind as well as the two formats, because it is where farm fuel gets dirty. A bulk tank settles water and sediment to its bottom, so drawing from a low outlet fills cans with exactly what the tank spent a month separating out. Draw from above the sump, drain the sump on a schedule rather than when a problem appears, and keep the adapter and tap dedicated to one liquid so nothing arrives from the last job.

The growth is at the interface, not in the fuel, which is why draining the water bottom is the single most effective thing anyone can do and why a full tank breathes less.

Storage rules and containment

On-farm fuel storage is regulated in many countries, with rules on quantity, container type, marking and secondary containment. Once you hold more than a modest quantity, expect to provide a bund or drip tray that catches the fuel if a can or tank fails, sited clear of drains and watercourses. In England the modest quantity has a number attached. The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 exempt an agricultural premises holding under 1,500 litres of oil, and catch it above that on the same terms as any commercial site: secondary containment of 110 per cent of the largest container, or 25 per cent of the total where several share a bund, whichever is greater. A single 1,200-litre bowser plus a few cans clears the threshold easily, so the exemption covers fewer farms than its reputation suggests.

Two details decide whether a particular farm is caught. Storage inside a building falls outside the regulations, so a bowser in a barn and the same bowser in the yard are different questions. And the definition of oil is broad, so the cans, the bowser and the tank all count towards the same total rather than being assessed separately. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own equivalent instruments.

Fuel duty is a separate regime and it moved recently. From 1 April 2022 the UK restricted rebated red diesel to a defined list of qualifying uses, and agriculture, horticulture, fish farming and forestry retained their entitlement while much of the work at the edge of farming lost it. Contracting outside those defined activities is the place operators get caught, and it is worth checking the actual use rather than assuming the sector answer covers everything the machine does.

Colour coding the cans is cheaper than any of the four failures below the line, and it is the one control that works when the person filling is not the person who bought them.

A common mistake

The one that bites is the unlabelled, dirty can. Someone fills a scuffed can from whatever tank is nearest, the marking has worn off, and by next season nobody knows if it holds diesel, petrol or DEF. Cross-contaminate DEF and diesel that way and you can write off an injection system. Clean cans, clear labels and one liquid per can cost nothing and head off the expensive version of this.

The version that survives a busy season is a system rather than a habit. Buy cans in the colours the site will use, mark them at the point they enter service, keep a spare of each so nobody is ever forced to improvise, and retire a can whose marking has worn off rather than re-labelling it from memory. Every one of those is a purchasing decision rather than a discipline problem, which is the only reason any of them holds.

How should diesel be stored on a farm?

Can farm fuel be carried on public roads?
