UN number to packaging finder

Type the UN number from section 14 of the safety data sheet. See its class and packing group, which UN drums, jerricans and IBCs may carry it, and how large each may be.

Special packing provisions

BB2 For UN No.1203, notwithstanding special provision 534 (see 3.3.1), IBCs shall only be used when the actual vapour pressure is not more than 110 kPa at 50 °C, or 130 kPa at 55 °C.

About this finder

What it works out

For the UN number on a safety data sheet: the class, the packing group, the limited quantity, the UN drums, jerricans and IBCs each entry may use with the largest size allowed, the special packing provisions that apply, and the containers in our range that fit.

Who uses it

Buyers specifying containers for a chemical, paint or fuel, dangerous goods advisers checking a supplier’s proposal, and distributors matching stock to a customer’s safety data sheet.

What it assumes

  • ADR 2025 Table A, read from the RID 2025 text that shares it, for 72 UN numbers of liquids. Road and rail in Europe; sea and air rules can be stricter.
  • Single packagings under P001 (or P504) and IBCs under IBC02 or IBC03, with the sizes their tables set. Combination packagings are not listed.
  • The UN mark must show the right level: X for packing group I, X or Y for II, X, Y or Z for III.

Where it stops

  • Special provisions in column 6 of the list are not reproduced, and some entries carry more conditions there. Check the current Table A before you ship.
  • A container also has to suit the chemical. Our chemical compatibility guide covers the materials.

Products behind the numbers: Industrial & Chemical Containers, Fuel & Gas Cans, Pails & Open-Head Buckets.

How to read the result

One UN number can have several entries, split by packing group or by vapour pressure, and each gets its own row of answers. Read the one whose name matches your safety data sheet. “Largest allowed” is the maximum capacity of one container of that type as a single packaging. The UN mark on the container must show the level for your packing group and a relative density at least as high as your liquid’s.

Performance level against packing groupA UN mark with X covers packing groups I, II and III; Y covers II and III; Z covers III only. Group I Group II Group III X X: suitable for Group I✓ X: suitable for Group II✓ X: suitable for Group III✓ Y Y: not suitable for Group I✕ Y: suitable for Group II✓ Y: suitable for Group III✓ Z Z: not suitable for Group I✕ Z: not suitable for Group II✕ Z: suitable for Group III✓
Liquid IBCs are only marked Y or Z: no IBC may carry a packing group I liquid.

Removable heads and packing group I

Open-head drums and jerricans, the 1A2, 1H2, 3A2 and 3H2 types, take liquids of packing groups II and III. In packing group I, ADR allows them only for liquids with a viscosity above 2 680 mm²/s (P001, note a), which is why a packing group I entry shows them as viscous liquids only. Each code has its own page: 1A2, 1H2, 3A2 and 3H2.

Common questions

What packaging can I use for UN 1263 paint?

In packing group II or III, closed or removable-head steel and plastic jerricans up to 60 litres and drums up to 450 litres, and most entries may use an IBC. In packing group I, drums are limited to 250 litres, removable heads take only viscous paint, and IBCs are not allowed. The finder shows each of its entries.

Can a packing group I liquid go in an open-head drum?

Only if its viscosity is above 2 680 mm2/s under ADR (P001, note a). Otherwise it needs a closed-head drum or jerrican with an X mark.

Can an IBC carry a packing group I liquid?

No. IBCs for liquids are tested to packing groups II and III only, and no packing group I entry lists an IBC instruction.

Where do I find the UN number and packing group?

Section 14 of the safety data sheet, the transport document, or the Dangerous Goods List itself, where the packing group is column 4 of ADR Table A.
